Today's world has necessitated a re-examination of the values and orientations, concepts and ideas that have been the building blocks of civilization. While globalization has made rapid strides, sectarian interests, questions concerning nation and nationalism, ethnicity and identity politics today confront mankind. This book seeks to look at these issues through the ideas presented by the Indian litterateur and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in the lectures and addresses he gave in the course of his travels to the countries of Europe, America and Asia. During these trips he gave lectures on a variety of subjects ranging from religion and philosophy to politics and art. The present study, based on the primary texts of Tagore and archival resources, is an endeavour to reread these lectures and addresses in order to attempt a critical analysis of Tagore’s ideas as they emerged in the various phases of his foreign travels. Within the broad framework of the critique of colonialism and European modernity, Tagore’s thoughts on civilization, education, religion, environment as well as his social and political ideas have been examined. Contents: Preface; Introduction; Part One: The West --- England; The Americas: USA, Canada, South America; Western Europe: France, Italy, Netherlands and Belgium; Central and Northern Europe: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden; Russia and Eastern Europe: Russia, East and Central Europe. Part Two: The East --- Japan, China, South and South East Asia, Persia. Conclusion; Bibliography; Index.
