The 250th birth anniversary of Rammohun Roy would be celebrated in 2022, yet much of his views and ideas even today seem refreshingly contemporary. He has been hailed by many, including Rabindranath Tagore, as the harbinger of modernity in India with his footprints covering a huge chunk of the socio-cultural existence of our country. At the same time, his legacy has been subjected to sharp denunciation in the past by both nationalists and left radicals, and again by the neo-nationalists of more recent vintage. In this backdrop, the present volume, which had its origins in a seminar on Roy held in 2012, seeks to revisit various facets of his social, cultural and intellectual contributions – his take on modernity, economic ideas, religious vision, notion of tolerance, cosmopolitan worldview – along with an assessment of the arguments and controversies generated by his detractors.
